Perhaps a better name would be Journal or News. I chose B.L.O.G.—who knew that “word” would become traditional? The good news is “Quilting” will always be universally recognized no matter what language we translate. We’ll still be searching for creative ways to express quilt art and new locations to shop for essentials. We desire inspirational instructors, exciting fabrics and especially quality THREADS—the glue! Our support network of quilters through satellite groups, guilds, and communities is vibrant (especially here, on Vancouver Island, BC). Join me as I share how-to articles on Threads and techniques, quilting events, profiles on fabric artists, natural things of beauty and  general interest to curious and resourceful stitchers! ...Cindy Scraba (Cinderella)

Quadra Island Quilter's Guild 2011 Marathon

The Quadra Island Quilter's Guild recently produced another successful Quilt Marathon "weekend" for charity. When Barb Round, QIQG Marathon Committee member (many of us have known her as the CQA Island Rep) first contacted me last summer to help sponsor this event and mentioned the 2 charity recipients, I needed no convincing. Children with life threatening illnesses who are cared for at the The BC Children's Hospital and Ronald MacDonald House receive these cheerful one-of-a-kind quilts. I believe this dedicated committee of volunteers deserves special recognition. It really does take more than one Island, a village and a single weekend to produce this more-than-a marathon annually.

With their permission I've posted their write-up below on how this A-TEAM does it; most importantly, I do not want to omit any of the special volunteers or other sponsors...

 (L) Sonia Craddock QIQG Pres., humble sponsor, Joan Varley Marathon Coord.
(R) Terry Phillips Publicity Agent
(Absent from photo and traveling in Australia! Barb Round)

[Quadra Quilters would like to extend thanks to all those who made the
November 2011 Quilt Marathon a comforting success! We had between 45 and 50
participants over the weekend.

A big THANK YOU -
To Barry & Sharron Hatelt, Quadra Island Builders volunteers, Terry
Hooper, and John Baumfield who came to set up or take down tables and
chairs. To John Baumfield for providing the extra 4 tables and running to
town to get more supplies! To Barb Van Orden and Joan Roberts for once again
running the kitchen both days and keeping sewers provided with refreshment
and nourishment.

To Suzanne Chickite at Seams of Cape Mudge for yet again making the
valuable quilt labels on her embroidery machine.  The labels say "Made with
Love, by Quadra Island Quilters Guild".

To our co-ordinator, Joan Varley, and our team leaders; Nancy Wersching,
Heather Van der Est, Kate White, and Jackee Thayson who provided sewers with
precut fabric kits, or ideas, and help along the way.
To our acquisitions volunteers, Barb Round and Michele Sjoholm, our
material storage personnel, Jenny and Terry Hooper and our publicity agent,
Terry Phillips.

To the record number of community members who came to volunteer to sew a
quilt, or iron fabric, or hand sew bindings and labels: You are Kristine
Kaskholm, Jan Bain, Robin Beaton, Sue Beattie, Margaret Hussain, Linda Kerr,
Maureen McDowell, Diana McKerracher, and Janet Richardson. Sue Beattie also
lead us in a much needed yoga stretching break. A special thank you to Betty
Thompson for her continued support.
It was also nice to have visitors dropping by to view the quilts, ask
questions, and offer accolades.

Fabric and quilting supplies are garnered by donation from various
companies, stores, and individuals from around BC and even as far away as
Manitoba and Ontario.  CR Fabricland, Sew & Sews, Cumberland Quilt Shop,
Honeysuckle Cottage Sales in Victoria, and Patti's Quilts in Vaughan,
Ontario donated bright and cheerful fabric for this year's quilts. For the
past several years batting has been provided at cost through the Cumberland
Quilt Shop. A large variety of threads and needles were supplied by Cindy's
Threadworks in Qualicum Beach and Marathon Threads, Canada in Winnipeg.

Thanks, Kosmic Kafeteria (Linda Gray), for catering the delicious dinner
on Saturday evening. And a special thank you to Tru Value Foods for their
ongoing community support in the way of shoppers points.

And to the Quadra Quilters themselves - your dedication is inspiring! Many
of you worked on two or even three quilts this year! And, as usual, you
provided wonderful soups and goodies for our Marathon potluck lunch.  This
event will have produced about 60 quilts (when all are finished) to be
distributed throughout the year to Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald
House.  A small sample of these "Comfort Quilts" are on display at the
Quadra Coastal Community Credit Union.]

Wow!
Thank you so much to all the dedicated individuals and committees for your commitment and expertise. And to Terry Phillips for forwarding their Event Highlights and photo to share. Comments are welcomed below...

  • Hi Cindy, Thanks again for your generous sponsorship. We'll let you know what the final tally of quilts is; most of them are done by our Christmas meeting and we take one huge photo!
