Perhaps a better name would be Journal or News. I chose B.L.O.G.—who knew that “word” would become traditional? The good news is “Quilting” will always be universally recognized no matter what language we translate. We’ll still be searching for creative ways to express quilt art and new locations to shop for essentials. We desire inspirational instructors, exciting fabrics and especially quality THREADS—the glue! Our support network of quilters through satellite groups, guilds, and communities is vibrant (especially here, on Vancouver Island, BC). Join me as I share how-to articles on Threads and techniques, quilting events, profiles on fabric artists, natural things of beauty and  general interest to curious and resourceful stitchers! ...Cindy Scraba (Cinderella)

Barbara Shapel Shares Thread Secrets with Nanaimo Quilters' Guild

Posted by cindy on Monday, October 18th, 2010

Barbara Shapel of Washougal, WA shared her signature THREAD secrets with members of the Nanaimo Quilters' Guild this past weekend. And it was a double treat that she was able to bring along her most recent winning masterpiece, "Autumn Beauty", from the Sept. 2010 Portland Show. We were honored to be the first Guild to help her celebrate this accomplishment.

A SURPRISE NEWSFLASH!!! It was actually this BACKSIDE of "Autumn Beauty", which Barbara had juried and won the coveted Best of Show Award.

"Butterflies" was one of the samplers, which students practiced their Thread painting skills etching Barbara's unique style within their individual quilted pieces. It's always inspiring in a workshop environment to observe quilters' diverse choices in fabrics and Threads, which ultimately creates uniqueness even though we traced her stencils. Perhaps sometime we'll display them altogether. Most of Cinderella's fantasies come true...

Traditionally, Barbara incorporates a variety of Thread stars within her quiltworks. She frequently recommends the 40 wt. high sheen trilobal polyester Threads as seen in this sampler. Her personal Thread library and knowledge of the Threadworld is impressive! (Click on Nature Colors™, Living Colors™, Rainbows™, from my Home Page Buttons for examples of this versatile thread type in a rainbow of colors)

Tons of metallic Thread, along with one of her favorite quilt stitches, gives this "Moon" sampler the illusion of depth and mystery.

Once again, the backside of her quilted moon mirrors the frontside.

Another workshop favorite was Barbara's Blue Heron sample. I can still hear the free-motion "whirring" of machines as everyone was sketching their own Thread painted legacies. It was fun playing with more new Superior Threads--especially Rainbows™,  plus numerous other threads, which everyone brought along and learned to use successfully. It seemed you could NOT have enough Thread types or colors. Not a surprise to me!?...

Her backside quilting is expectedly exquisite...Barbara's signature style creates quilts where the reverse side is an extension of her art offering another perspective. The majority of her quilting incorporates the same bobbin Thread as the top Thread, which helps to achieve her stunning, "reversible" machine quilted legacies.

Barbara demonstrates "how and why" to hoop for densely quilted designs. She taught The Art of Machine Quilting on Day 1 and the 3-Thread Samplers on Day 2. I admired her unique quilting style and effective teaching methods. A Wow (!) weekend for all of us.
