Perhaps a better name would be Journal or News. I chose B.L.O.G.—who knew that “word” would become traditional? The good news is “Quilting” will always be universally recognized no matter what language we translate. We’ll still be searching for creative ways to express quilt art and new locations to shop for essentials. We desire inspirational instructors, exciting fabrics and especially quality THREADS—the glue! Our support network of quilters through satellite groups, guilds, and communities is vibrant (especially here, on Vancouver Island, BC). Join me as I share how-to articles on Threads and techniques, quilting events, profiles on fabric artists, natural things of beauty and  general interest to curious and resourceful stitchers! ...Cindy Scraba (Cinderella)

Kaffe Fassett Visits Van Isl

Posted by cindy on Monday, October 4th, 2010

Kaffe Fassett shares his design inspirations with over 200 Vancouver Island quilters--an event hosted by the Parksville Quilters' Guild, co-sponsored by Cindy's Threadworks. Kaffe's quick Canadian visit included this side-trip due to a few great quilters having the foresight and abilities to put this all together. After his workshop in Vancouver he flew over to meet more fans who carpooled and bused to this Island premiere event.
  • Who is Kaffe? (pronounced 'safe') He is one of the most gifted decorative artists of our day--a brilliant colorist who creates designs for knitting, needlepoint, quilters, and produces a range of wallpaper & textiles. A multi-Fassetted guy from London, England!

It was great to sit back, relax and enjoy Kaffe's colorful, eclectic presentation of stunning quilts, paintings, fiber arts, pottery and culture--all spiced with his signature humour. His quirky color references always stirred up laughter. He relishes rusty relics for their artistic appeal. He questions all-white quilts, "Where's their passion for color". And he revealed 2 secrets:
1. IF you happen to guess his "real" name he'll admit to it.
2. His memoirs are a work in progress destined for future publication.

Dare to dream this vision for your own sewing studio...

This theatre at Ballenas Secondary School in Parksville, BC was well-equipped for the afternoon's meeting for many creative minds. Kudos to the 2 drama students for lending their backstage sound and lighting expertise.

A special "Thank You" to Margaret Furnell (L) PQHQG Workshop Chair for spearheading this event and steering Kaffe Fassett right over to our Island. Congratulations to Lois Woytenko, a member of the Parksville Guild, for winning the "Art Studio" Thread Color Collection door prize donated by Cindy's Threadworks.Com. www.parksvillequilthousequilters.com

Kaffe was scheduled for his return flight; however, everyone wanted his autograph within the remaining 15 minutes following his lecture...Luckily, Cinderella was already in the hallway and thrilled to receive his personal attention for 1 of those minutes and finally meet him.

And "THE Bag" that inspired the journey to sponsor and help celebrate Kaffe's arrival. I prefer using reds and bright color combinations in my projects. This particular bag features "Serape" stripes (inside) and his "Liberty Paisley" fabric on the backside, which he noted with pleasure along with the quilting detail! The textured bag front features partner/designer, Brandon Mably fabrics: "Casbah Zig Zag" and popular "Rings". Both artists' fabric lines co-ordinate perfectly and with intention. Nice.

....A medley of colors and shapes are all around us--open your eyes and you will see them: "Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts", Kaffe Fassett's latest quilting publication.
