Perhaps a better name would be Journal or News. I chose B.L.O.G.—who knew that “word” would become traditional? The good news is “Quilting” will always be universally recognized no matter what language we translate. We’ll still be searching for creative ways to express quilt art and new locations to shop for essentials. We desire inspirational instructors, exciting fabrics and especially quality THREADS—the glue! Our support network of quilters through satellite groups, guilds, and communities is vibrant (especially here, on Vancouver Island, BC). Join me as I share how-to articles on Threads and techniques, quilting events, profiles on fabric artists, natural things of beauty and  general interest to curious and resourceful stitchers! ...Cindy Scraba (Cinderella)

Dog Bones or Thread Spools?

Posted by cindy on Friday, May 7th, 2010

What could these Thread spools and dog bones possibly have in common? Apparently, they've converged here to re-purpose a canvas table cloth from a previous time into a functional display item for Cindy's Threadworks.

While I was preparing my booth décor for the Victoria Quilters' Guild show mid-May, I unpacked 2 table cloths used during the 90's to market doggy cookies at various shows and outdoor markets. I hope you're amused by this unique transformation and process...

The best surprise was the opportunity to play with more Threads: Metallics™ (above), New Super Brights™, Glitter™,  Rainbows™ and King Tut™. Basically, you're in free-motion mode (drop feeder dogs; very appropriate, lower top tension to #1 for Metallics™ thread and insert a #90/14 Superior Topstitch needle.) I used various colors of the rainbow to enhance my theme. I especially love the Glitters™ and the neon Super Brights™ although a challenge to photograph.

Originally, all these spools were dog bones until I applied a marker and 'threadpaint'. Under the multi-colored Ricky Tims fabric is a green checkered, country themed border. The photo below has one of the original checkered borders for 2 reasons: not enough fabric(!) and it's unlikely it will be visible. Plus, I left the hearts and pawprints as well for posterity.

Next, I patched over the previous company name and scaled the letters and new font to fit within the 6 spaces on 2 different sizes of cloths. Often at shows you will expect to use 8' or 6' tables which these cloths were originally designed to fit. Luckily, I had enough 'aged' canvas saved from that era, which blended well. And this was a perfect opportunity to use clear MonoPoly™ invisible thread to zig zag a tidy edge on the fused, patched pieces and a straight stitch close to the edges of the rainbow border.

When you visit my booth, you'll know the history behind these table cloths. Admittedly, it would have been simpler and quicker to create another cloth from scratch; however, isn't it more meaningful to repurpose fabric and add new life to pre-loved items? Your comments are always welcome, below...
