Perhaps a better name would be Journal or News. I chose B.L.O.G.—who knew that “word” would become traditional? The good news is “Quilting” will always be universally recognized no matter what language we translate. We’ll still be searching for creative ways to express quilt art and new locations to shop for essentials. We desire inspirational instructors, exciting fabrics and especially quality THREADS—the glue! Our support network of quilters through satellite groups, guilds, and communities is vibrant (especially here, on Vancouver Island, BC). Join me as I share how-to articles on Threads and techniques, quilting events, profiles on fabric artists, natural things of beauty and  general interest to curious and resourceful stitchers! ...Cindy Scraba (Cinderella)

Delicious Threads for Divas

Posted by cindy on Friday, March 5th, 2010

Val Ursulak-Dream Dance (Medium)

Recently, I had the pleasure to share some of my exciting new Thread inventory at the monthly meeting for the Nanaimo Dimensional Divas, local chapter of the Appliqué Society (TAS) www.theappliquesociety.org . The art quilt above was created by master quilter and appliqué instructor, Val Ursulak. Her "Dream Dance" features intensely, thread painted/embroidered cranes. I love her clever use of thread tones, ranging from lights to darks, which effectively reflects sunlight in contrast to the soft shadows. The high-sheen trilobal polyester threads in multiple colors and the extra pizazz of golden Glitter™ "sunrays" adds another surprise element--a fabulous feast for the senses! Can't wait to see this project completed.

Another highlight of this meeting was showcasing some of the magnificent quilt entries destined for the 2010 Quilt Canada Conference in Calgary, April 26 to May 1st. If you're planning to attend expect a very special treat. www.canadianquilter.com

I sincerely thank all the dynamic Divas for their enthusiasm, support and sharing their first-class work--WOW. I won't soon forget the fun and fabulous lunch, Val and Jim!

  • I'm blessed to have learned the art of Applique from Val Ursulak. Several years ago Val offered a class to the Nanaimo Quilters Guild before each monthly meeting to introduce members to Applique. This was so successful Val gave two classes, one before and after the meeting. The Dimensional Diva Chapter was formed following these classes as many of us were "bitten" by Val's enthusiasm for applique. Val's generosity in sharing her skills and talents in this discipline is unlimited and I am so grateful to this lovely lady.
